ECE Net Zero Path 2035

Climate change threatens the foundations of good air quality and our health. In 2023, we laid out a path towards net zero emissions by 2035. Launching our new company programme for a Greener ECE…

Each department within ECE has a critical role to play in achieving this ambition. Production of each air handling unit currently makes up 90% of ECE’s Carbon Footprint, of which 30% is building energy. Furthermore, emissions from manufacturing AHUs contributes the remaining 60% to our overall Carbon Footprint.

What does the Path involve?

ECE Net Zero Path (“the Path”) creates a clear set of performance criteria relating to various elements of a net zero carbon manufacture – in building AHUs, in operation and recycling. The Path lays the foundation of implementation expected over the next decade. The set of standards that forms a path to a greener future, will be periodically updated to ensure it remains relevant as technology and modern methods of manufacture evolve.

As a business we are introducing life cycle thinking that helps our employees to identify the most significant environmental and social impacts across our value chains, to make better decisions where carbon impact reductions can be made.

The Path sets out a vision for achieving whole life net zero carbon manufacturing whilst improving equipment quality, with a clear roadmap for reducing operational energy demands, embodied carbon in manufacture and the whole life carbon cycle of air handling units used within the construction industry.

What steps are we taking?

The introduction of the Path will support the growth and flexibility of zero carbon energy supplies. By introducing a whole life assessment methodology, we are:

  • Increasing on-site renewable generation beyond current practice by introducing solar power.
  • Manufacturing using eco-friendly components and tailoring them to phase out direct fossil fuel usage from all primary heating and cooling systems.
  • Only using the most efficient components to help drive down our clients’ carbon footprint.
  • Designing out box framed aluminium metals and manufacturing sustainable AHUs by introducing recycled metal with a frameless AHU construction.
  • Manufacturing equipment suitable for beyond the lifecycle so that reuse, recovery and recycling are possible when the equipment is replaced in 25 years’ time.
  • Only sourcing materials and components from nearby UK suppliers within a 150-mile radius. We no longer import from overseas and only buy British goods from mainland UK to build our AHUs.
  • Embedding digitalisation and reducing paper usage, providing hybrid work patterns to our team where appropriate.
  • Fitting smart electric vehicle charging points to decarbonise and tackle air pollution.
  • Collecting and sharing data where appropriate, accelerating the business understanding of carbon impacts in design and operation and providing data to continually improve company benchmarks.
