RXA3MX Rotary
exchanger aluminium
3-way mix
Rotary heat exchanger air handlers can be installed either in a stacked or side-by-side configuration. Their rotating carrier classifies them as regenerators. This means they can be placed in a counter-flow arrangement in which the rotating storage mass is heated and cooled alternately by heat releasing and heat absorbing air streams. Depending on the air conditions and the surface of the storage mass, moisture can also be transferred in this process.
The supply and extract air streams are kept adjacent so that they pass through the heat exchanger at the same time. From this process the specific heat output capacity depends on the temperature difference between the two air streams. This ensures that your rotary heat exchanger is suitable for heat as well as coolth recovery and can serve you all year round.
The unit has an air-mixing plenum that combines two air streams, fresh and recirculated. The mix of fresh and recirculated air streams are adjusted by three sets of dampers to suit the needs of your building’s occupants. The dampers are controlled on a range of 0-100% open which ensures a regular supply of fresh air, and constant extraction of old air.

Heat recovery
efficiency
The correct efficiency will depend on the economic considerations of your site and written guidelines like Eco Design Commission Regulation (EU) No 1253/2014. Your unit’s efficiency can be affected by energy prices, age, running times, temperatures, maintenance costs, and interest rates. With regard to (EU) No. 1253/2014, profitability, and environmental protection, the heat recovery efficiency should be no less than 73%. If the conditions are right, heat recovery efficiencies can reach as high as 82%.
This system works particularly well in buildings where the occupancy varies, be it throughout the day, or seasonally throughout the year. Typically, during mid-season weather conditions, ambient temperatures are suitable for free cooling purposes. In these conditions, the mixing damper will close, and the system will only use fresh air, improving the efficiency of your system. When fresh air is not required, the mixing damper can be automatically set to full recirculation to further improve energy efficiency.
The added benefit of utilising a 3-way mix will reduce boiler and pump size, lessen the need for pipework, lower installation time, and make other items such as frost coils redundant.
Ancillary items
Your rotary exchanger has a number of other features available to improve the quality of the air at your site.
Filtration
Filters are a standard part of your air handling unit that captures irritants and dust, keeping your air clean and improving wellbeing.
Direct heating
Placed directly in the air stream, heat exchangers are used to regulate and control the temperature. These come as either gas fired heaters or electric air heater batteries.
Indirect heating and cooling
The temperature can also be controlled by coils filled with hot or chilled water medium, or by heat pumps fed by a central plant.
Humidification
When continuous heating can sometimes make the air drier, your AHU can reintroduce moisture with an evaporative, vaporiser, spray mist, or wetted medium.
Dehumidification
Your AHU’s cooling coil can over-cool the air to create condensation while a heating coil maintains the air temperature to reduce moisture in your building.
Intelligent energy controls
Our intelligent energy controls can come as standard with one of our rotary exchanger air handling units. They give you an unmatched level of control over your site’s air, allowing you to monitor return air quality, recoverable energy, and CO2 concentration to maintain optimal energy efficiency. You’ll be able to lower costs while keeping your site safe and comfortable.
Net zero carbon
Achieving net zero carbon involves offsetting a building’s carbon emissions with sustainable practices. Your AHU will provide the correct protection and air quality of your site efficiently by recapturing energy while still providing a warm and comfortable environment. It will also be built to the highest standards using local materials, further reducing your impact on the environment.
Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)
Our engineers will conduct a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) on your unit after manufacture. The FAT is a series of tests and checks that verify the unit is assembled correctly using the specified components and to the specified design, that it is safe, and will work correctly. The results will be easily accessible through our client portal:
- Completed FAT protocol
- IOM
- Recommended spare parts lists
- Certificates of compliance
- As-built certified drawings
- Air tightness certificate
- Filter DOP certificate
