The brief
ECE was asked by repeat client, Neilcott Construction Limited, to supply an externally-mounted Air Handling Unit (AHU), compliant with HTM 03-01, parallel to the helipad at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London.
The specifics
Unlike many other roof-mounted AHU units, the system atop the Holdsworth Major Trauma Ward at St George’s Hospital is subject to the effects of helicopters taking off and landing on a regular basis. There were concerns about the increased air pressure/velocity from the helicopter downdraft, and how this may increase the pressure through the AHU and whether it affected the duct.
ECE’s solution was to incorporate supply and extract ducting into the AHU and services corridor structure, so that enough distance was provided from the intake and discharge connections. This meant duct pressurisation did not occur. Our work also included the provision of a fully weatherproof services corridor to IP65 standards, fitted with task lighting and solid flooring, and with sufficient height for condensate traps to the cooling coil and plate recuperator.
Bespoke elements
To fulfil the brief, ECE custom-made a heavy duty, epoxy painted rolled steel channel support system for the BMS control panel. The finished installation was truly one-of-a-kind, complying with the stringent HTM 03-01 specialised ventilation for healthcare buildings.
