How will we create your air
handling system?

Planning and advice

Our team will conduct a free site survey and assess the relevant legislation and regulations surrounding indoor air quality and ventilation. From there we give comprehensive advice and guidance on the design implications, legality, maintenance requirements, and operation of a specialised air handling unit.

1

Fully custom design

Every component is designed down to the millimetre to fit the space at your site. Our design engineers are highly experienced and work with building information modelling and site teams to reconcile the unique needs of healthcare sites with their space restrictions.

3

Ongoing support

We offer service and maintenance packages that will help extend the lifespan of your AHU and resolve any potential issues quickly and efficiently. Our in-house technicians will use their familiarity with your system to deliver an effective and efficient service every time.

5

Identify air quality

We use the highly specific data provided by the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to identify the air quality at your location’s post code. This lets us select the appropriate supply air category and filter classification in accordance with SVHSoc.02 Classification, BS EN 16798-3:2017 and BS EN 16890:2016.

2

Professional installation

Our technicians can deliver and install every part of your air handling system. We ensure that there is safe access for cleaning and maintenance so your unit will maintain its efficacy without clogging or slowing down. This ensures the safe operation of your air handling unit, eliminating the possibility of airborne pathogens and contaminants.

The importance of indoor air quality in healthcare

There is an increasing awareness surrounding the significance of indoor air quality in the healthcare industry. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the World Health Organisation have both published studies on the importance of air quality for the good health of both the building and its occupants. Critical parts of a healthcare facility such as operating theatres, laboratories, and pharmaceutical production suites require a superior level of indoor air quality to remove airborne microorganisms that can cause severe infection in patients or contaminate samples. It is estimated that as many as 25% of infections that result from surgery are caused by airborne particulates making it clear how essential proper air circulation is. Conventional air conditioning systems provide between four and eight air changes per hour, replacing stale and contaminated air with clean, fresh air. A custom designed and professionally manufactured system from ECE UK can change the air as often as ninety times per hour, making it a vital tool to reduce the risk to patients and increase health and wellbeing at your facility.

The ideal air handling units for your healthcare needs

We provide a range of AHUs with different functions that can all be customised to suit the exact needs of the different areas of your site. Our experienced technicians will work carefully with your engineers to create a bespoke solution. We’d recommend the following units for a healthcare facility and can help select the right one for the right space. We will further tailor each unit to your site’s specific needs.

RAC

This unit keeps the heat recovery and extract air streams completely separate. This is vital for a sensitive healthcare environment such as an operating theatre, as there is no way for the extract air to contaminate the supply air. This ensures a cleaner indoor environment for patients.

PXA

The supply and extract air are kept distinct by a plate recuperator which captures heat from the extracted air and uses it to warm the supply, preserving heat and energy. This plate has been tested to be 100% leak free, so you can rely on reduced cross contamination and a more hygienic environment.

RXA

These AHUs are classified as regenerators due to their rotating carrier. The carrier rotates between the supply and extract air streams to recover the energy from the extract and pass it over to the supply. The RXA does include a purge sector that reduces leakage from the extracted air to the supply but is still best suited to non-critical areas such as administration.

SSAU

Ideal for spaces which only require supply air, this unit recirculates secondary and fresh air back into a positively pressured area like a clean room or pharmaceutical suite. Multi-stage filtration including HEPA can be used with this AHU with 99.995% filtration efficiency at 0.3 microns.

SU

This unit provides supply air for ventilation systems and has a separate extract which can be connected to a fume cupboard to remove harmful substances from laboratories. This AHU can be fitted with multi-stage filtration including HEPA to provide 99.995% filtration efficiency at 0.3 microns.

Every single AHU in our range has the option for single or multi-stage filtration to suit the requirements of the space it is ventilating. Depending on your needs, your AHU could include anything from a single fine filter to a four-stage filtration system that includes a coarse filter, fine filter, carbon filter, and a high-efficiency particulate absorbing (HEPA) filter. At this high level of filtration, your air handling unit can provide cumulative efficiency of as much as 99.99965%.

Achieving net zero carbon through air management

In 2020, NHS England laid out a road map towards becoming the first net zero national health service in the world by the year 2045, with its Welsh and Scottish counterparts making similar pledges afterwards. Part of what will make these goals possible is intelligently designed air handling units and ventilation systems that can capture and recycle heat while still providing clean and uncontaminated air. At ECE UK, our team are committed to helping the NHS achieve their carbon goals by installing this highly effective equipment at healthcare facilities across the country.
